Ukraine withdrew from the agenda the question of NATO membership

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday approved the first reading a draft law on the basis of domestic and foreign policy, proposed by President Viktor Yanukovych. Over 253 MPs voted in the document when necessary 226.

Presenting the bill, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that “Ukraine will state clear, predictable and responsible for our own citizens and for the whole world.” “A central element of foreign policy predictability and consistency, which is contained in the bill - is an unambiguous confirmation of non-aligned status of Ukraine”, - said the prime minister. He stressed that the president proposes to remove from the agenda the issue of Ukrainian membership in NATO, which divides society and diverts it from the effective ways to develop the state.

The opposition - the Yulia Tymoshenko bloc and Our Ukraine - People’s Self-Defense - sharply criticized the bill because it contains non-membership in NATO and urged not to vote for the document.
